The existing structure is retained in this reconstruction of a 2 storey semi-detached house in central singapore. bringing light and a sense of spaciousness into the house is achieved by removing various walls and creating large contemporary window openings. The ground floor is opened up for modern open plan living, with a dining area and dry kitchen, all of which are directly connected to the outdoor garden spaces via large sliding glass doors.
A feature steel suspended staircase replaces the existing concrete staircase, allowing light and views through it to the dry kitchen beyond, from the main entry foyer.
On the second floor, larger bedrooms and bathrooms are created, as the previous layout suffered from narrow and dark spaces. Light is now allowed to permeate all the bedrooms, with a teak timber screen and perforated slimline brick wall both serving to transform the look of the house while providing the necessary privacy for the master bedroom and bathroom spaces.
