Glade House is sited in an upscale landed housing district in central Singapore. Occupying a wide frontage, the house exterior is shielded from the street by metal sliding screens on the building facade. Deep overhanging roof eaves provide further protection from the elements and allow the fenestration to be kept opened for ample cross-ventilation even during the rainy monsoon seasons. As a large number of the family members are avid swimmers, a key design criteria in the project brief was to provide a 25m lap pool, which runs parallel to the main building axis and turns around at the end, wrapping around the dining and dry kitchen. The water body envelopes and cradles the building and provides the occupants within the full experience of tropical living, fully immersed in and surrounded by nature. A row of towering, mature raintrees embrace the periphery of the plot within which the house sits, providing framed views of a dense green curtain from the rooms within.
